Badgerwood Lodge, Sudeley Estate, Winchcombe
The property was originally known as Whiteshill Cottage – abandoned and left to nature. My client, Henry Dent-Brocklehurst, spent childhood hours roaming the surrounding countryside which is within the heart of his family’s 600 acre organic farm on the historic Sudeley Estate and he dreamed of building a home right there.
Years later, the renovation began. The chosen unusual contemporary design presented a challenge to the build team who committed to a sensitive restoration, embracing the ambition of transforming a property that initially had no direct utilities into a luxurious yet deeply connected home. Its unparalleled position offers breathtaking panoramic views of the majestic Sudeley Castle and across the glorious Evesham Valley.
When Mr. Dent-Brocklehurst first approached Beltaine Designs to take on the interiors part of the project, he expressed a strong desire to create a classic, comfortable English home – contrasting the modern building that was taking shape.
Architecturally, Badgerwood is a masterful blend of old and new. It marries the cottage's original, historic features with contemporary steel and glass additions, creating a truly 'one-off' architectural statement. This striking juxtaposition, set against the beauty of the castle backdrop, makes Badgerwood utterly distinctive and a genuine 'jewel in the crown' of the Sudeley Estate.
